Coles makes major change to health food sections in supermarkets

Coles has announced a major shift in its supermarket aisles that will change the way customers shop forever. The supermarket giant will no longer be stocking healthy pantry items in a designated health foods aisle and will instead add them into their respective categories.

Coles has announced a major shift in its supermarket aisles that will change the way customers shop forever.

The supermarket giant will no longer be stocking healthy pantry items in a designated ‘health foods’ aisle and will instead add them into their respective categories.

The first major transformation is in the breakfast aisle where healthy options are now sitting alongside traditional cereals.

A Coles spokesperson told news.com.au the change will make it easier for customers to find all their brekky needs, including healthy alternatives, in one place.

“With 97 per cent of Coles customers shopping in the breakfast aisle every week, the tailored layout will help make dietary options such as gluten free cereals more accessible and easier for customers to find in one destination, including a new ‘Gluten Free Cereal’ section – previously only found in the health food aisle,” the spokesperson said.

Coles will also add 55 new products including its first-ever breakfast in beverage form, Breakfast on the Move (BOM), and an exclusive range of 11 high fibre and vitamin rich ‘Goodness Bowl’ cereals and low sugar mueslis from Uncle Toby’s.

As part of the transformation, customers will also notice Coles oats, cereals and muesli

with new branding and packaging, including Mighty Grain, Wheat Biscuits and Right Start breakfast cereals.

Over the coming weeks, other pantry items will be relocated to their respective section, changing the health foods aisle to a small section.

It will now feature vitamins and protein bars as well as “superfood” ingredients such as chia seeds and dried nuts.

“We have also relaunched our Superfoods layout, bringing together all of our Wellness Road superfoods in one location to create a destination which is easier to shop for customers looking for superfoods and niche health ingredients,” the spokesperson said.

The move comes just one day after Coles stripped an entire range from its shelves — removing single-use plastic tableware.

Instead, it has replaced it with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified tableware like timber cutlery and paper plates.

It’s a commitment the supermarket giant made back in February this year, when it agreed to no longer sell single-use plastic tableware including cups, plates, bowls, straws and cutlery from July 1, 2021.

“A recent Coles survey showed 65 per cent are concerned about the environmental impacts of single-use plastic tableware and prefer sustainable alternatives,” a Coles spokesperson told news.com.au.

“Our customers are telling us they want to make more sustainable choices and this is one way we are helping them.”

The spokesperson said shelves will be replenished with sustainable tableware alternatives including reusable options “and our Green Choice range of plates, bowls and cups which are compostable made using sugarcane pulp”.
